Language of instruction:

Assumed knowledge on:

Many of today's problems require concerted policy action at international or global level. To address poverty, food insecurity, global warming and human rights violations, international policies and institutions have been put in place. This course provides an introduction to three different contemporary, international institutions and their policies the WTO and trade liberalization; the Kyoto protocol and regulation of global warming; UN security council and humanitarian intervention. These institutions and their policies are analyzed and assessed from different angles with the help of four theoretical perspectives (neo-institutional economics, evolutionary economics, legal anthropology and actor-oriented sociology).

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
- to describe the main features of international institutions and policies that aim to liberalize international trade, to regulate global warming or to govern humanitarian intervention;
- to define the key concepts of four theoretical perspectives and their use for understanding and/or improving international policies and institutions;
- to use and combine different theoretical perspectives to analyze international policies and institutions in the field of international trade, global warming and humanitarian intervention.
