Assumed knowledge on:

HNE-20806 Metabolic Aspects of Nutrition; MIB-10306 Cell Biology 2; HNE-23306 Pharmacology and Nutrition

Continuation courses:

HNE-34806 Nutritional Genomics and Genetics

This course provides an in depth coverage of human energy and nutrient metabolism, focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying nutrient absorption, utilization, storage, and mobilization. In addition, the regulation of nutrient homeostasis at the level of allosteric interactions, covalent modifications and gene expression is addressed.

Learning outcomes:

After this course, the student is expected to:
- demonstrate detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying nutrient metabolism;
- be able to synthesize diverse pieces of scientific data into a coherent conclusion;
- recognize the process of scientific discovery as the basis for future textbook information;
- appreciate the usefulness and limitations of animal experimentation and in vitro studies for biomedical research;
- be able to extract relevant information from the biomedical scientific literature.

To reach these objectives, the student will:
- answer problem sets;
- prepare and follow lectures;
- search and read relevant original research papers.

- written mid-term examination;
- written final examination (individual).

Literature will be posted on Blackboard.
