Language of instruction:

Assumed knowledge on:

Basic knowledge of Nutrition and Applied Nutrition (knowledge should cover at least 80% of chapters from handbook: Geissler C, Powers H. Human Nutrition, 11th edition, Livingstone. ISBN 13: 9780443073564.
- basic knowledge of Statistics (e.g. MAT-14303)

The overall aim of the course is to acquire critical insight and skills in various methodologies that are commonly applied in experimental nutritional research. To achieve this aim, knowledge on common methodological issues in nutritional research is deepened and extended. Topics that will be covered are: aspects of nutritional research; designs in nutritional research; commonly used methods on the measurement of food consumption, biochemical parameters, nutrigenetics, energy expenditure, physical activity, and body composition.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- have insight into the scientific empirical cycle;
- show insight into factors which determine the choice for research subjects, designs, and methods;
- choose appropriate methods to measure body composition, physical activity, dietary intake or nutrient status in a given situation;
- have basic skills in laboratory practice relevant to this field;
- understand the basic concepts of nutrigenomics;
- understand ethical issues with regard to the choice of subjects, methods and study design;
- critically comment on methodological choices in published scientific literature.

The student will follow theoretical lectures on methodological aspects related to nutritional research (see content). In practicals and tutorials this knowledge will be illustrated and practiced. Some of the topics are supported by e-learning modules.

Tutorials and practicals are mandatory. The written exam consists of 5-6 open questions (open book exam).
