The course 'Agriculture, Food and Policy' gives an introduction in agricultural policy. It is taught in Dutch language and requires limited economic background knowledge from participants. Issues that are dealt with are the history of and reasons for agricultural policies; different agricultural policy instruments and their national and international effects; the EU's Common Agricultural Policy with its problems and reforms; links with rural development, the environment, animal welfare, and food safety; effects of agricultural policies on developing countries; and international negotiations on agricultural trade.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this course the student is expected to be able:
- reproduce various descriptions and theories on the evolution and effects of agricultural policies; - understand public and political debates on agricultural policy issues;
- identify the national and international impacts that different agricultural policy instruments have on different stakeholders.

- participating in an agricultural policy game (practical sessions);
- studying literature.
