Metropolitan Analysis, Design & Engineering (JD 2020) (MMD) / MSc


In a fast urbanising world, cities and metropolitan regions increasingly face challenges of sustainability and quality of life, that put at risk issues of mobility and logistics, water and waste management, energy, resource and food security, health and wellbeing, all in a social, spatial and policy context. The MSc programme Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MADE) integrates analysis, design and engineering; the physical, digital, social and policy environments and the city and its citizens. These challenges are motivating science and society to approach metropoles differently. Advanced metropolitan solutions are being made possible by today's revolution of new technologies, theories and methods. But no actor or stakeholder can make metropoles move in one certain direction. Metropolitan solutions require cooperation between knowledge institutes, companies and governments, between cities, citizens and civil society. The MSc programme is student-centred, has an entrepreneurial focus and operates in the territorial context of Amsterdam as a living laboratory, exemplary for other metropolitan regions in the world.
The master programme is offered in the frame of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS), setup by core academic partners Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their industry and research partners.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this MSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- understand and apply inter- or transdisciplinary knowledge of - in addition to their BSc competences - one or more of the following subjects; mobility, transport, logistics, infrastructure; urban climate; water quality, waste management; health , wellbeing, livability; resource security in cities - energy, food, waste - and the social-spatial context of these;
- explain how these subjects are linked to the contemporary and future challenges in metropolitan areas and to contribute to inter- and transdisciplinary projects to achieve sustainable metropolitan solutions;
- carry out academic research on the metropolitan metabolism and develop advanced scientific knowledge and knows how to put this in practice.
- carry out a thorough problem analysis and analyse the issues at play in the subjects mentioned under learning outcome 1 and 2, and propose and design alternatives to make cities more circular, vital and socially (inter-) connected;
- design and engineer sustainable solutions dealing with contemporary metropolitan challenges;
- develop socio-technical designs in an integrated manner for sustainable interventions in metropolitan contexts;
- in doing so, taking the interest of various relevant private and public stakeholders into account and together with these co-creates sustainable solutions for metropolitan issues;
- apply advanced academic and intellectual skills. To work methodically and apply academically grounded theoretical approaches, models, analyses and interpretations to counter problems in the day to day metropolitan fabric;
- have a reflective attitude towards the relation between science, technology and society and is able to reflect on their own position and role in this;
- apply entrepreneurial skills, creatively adding to innovation and having a feel for the identification of opportunities and challenges that go hand-in-hand with organising, marketing and financing of new initiatives including business ventures and start-ups related to metropolitan challenges of today;
- work in multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary circumstances in an urbanising world;
- understand and deal with the various roles that relevant actors play in metropolitan areas and the different views that these stakeholder groups will have.
