Throughout the past decades the term social capital has gained in popularity. Words like networking and mingling have found their place in our contemporary language. But what does social capital mean? And what can your social network do for you? This course will give content to the otherwise empty container concept of social capital. To achieve this, social capital will be approached from historical, social-psychological, sociological, anthropological, economical and political perspectives.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- define social capital and give content to the concept of social capital;
- apply the concept of social capital on their everyday lives;
- identify the application of social capital within social sciences research;
- critically assess the measurement and application of the concept of social capital within social sciences research.
- writing and presenting an essay, discussion.
The course will be of a highly interactive nature.
The grade will be based upon active participation (30%) and an essay (70%).
Each component needs a minimum mark of 5.5 to pass.
