Note: This course can not be combined in an individual programme with PBR-30806 Design of Plant Breeding Programmes.

NOTE: this course is taught specifically for the students in the online Specialization Plant Breeding and is not available for the on-Campus students. Self-registration for this course is not possible.

The Plant Breeding Design Cluster has three major elements, Scientific skills, Academic skills and a design project.
Academic Skills building focuses on the following skills: project management, information literacy, scientific writing, presentation skills, argumentation skills, communication skills.
The design project focuses on the integration of knowledge on various aspects of plant breeding into a breeding programme for a specific crop. The theoretical and practical aspects of plant breeding are combined with economic, societal and environmental aspects.  

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
Academic skills:
- improve their performance in giving presentations, using argumentation skills, and communication by defining learning goals and working on these goals;
- write scientific texts;
- find relevant literature;
- work on a project in an international team.

Scientific skills:
- critically analyse scientific papers.

Design of a breeding Programme:
integrate theoretical and practical knowledge in a design study for a breeding program;
understand connections between the crop, breeding methods, techniques  and breeding goals;
- design a breeding program for a specific crop (all along the chain from defining the specific breeding goal(s) until marketing the newly developed variety);
select parameters (parental choice, breeding strategy, population genetics, selection methods, traits of interest) that are crucial for successful practical breeding;
reflect on breeding methods and their presuppositions; justify the choices made in the breeding program and provide scientific argumentation. Consider alternatives and estimate their implications;
write both a work plan and a final report of the breeding program;
present the work plan and final breeding plan plenary;
- critically evaluate presented programs of other groups.

Activities:

Tutorials and assignments for development of skills. 
Study knowledge clips on theoretical background. 
Work on a group assignment to design a breeding program. Team meetings, literature study, proposal and report writing, oral and online presentation.

Examination:

The assessment has the following components:
- project (toolbox, proposal, report, presentation, peer review), 45%;
- scientific skills, 20%;
- academic skills (writing, information literacy, communication and interaction, argumentation, presentation), 35%;
*All parts have to be passed (i.e. score of 5.5 or higher).

The final mark for the project (design of a breeding program) will consist of the following elements:
worked out crop matrix with motivation of crop choice (pass/fail), written proposal (project planning) (20%), final report (50%),final presentation (15%) and exam (15%).
