The course offers basic knowledge and skills on planting assortment, outdoor construction and freehand- and digital representation techniques for BSc students of Landscape Architecture.
Basic knowledge of assortments of trees, shrubs, hedges, perennials and bulbs is obtained by observing, drawing, recognizing, selecting and organizing. Basic knowledge and understanding of outdoor construction is obtained by observing, drawing, and digital re-drawing. Sketches and perspectives, diagrams, plan- and section drawings, impressions and technical details describe the structure, the visual experience and technical aspects of a design project in various drawing projections and scale levels.
In the first place, design drawings are language and craft, and not until then artistic experiment. The experiment is the design, of which the drawings should tell the various aspects and qualities precisely and in an attractive way.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand the architectural and ecological characteristics of a selection of trees, shrubs, hedges, perennials and bulbs;
- understand the characteristics and applications of construction materials and elements for landscape design;
- apply basic level freehand drawing techniques such as eye-level perspectives, design sketches at different levels of scale and detail, in plans, cross sections and schematic illustrations;
- apply basic level digital visualisation techniques;
- understand the relationship between the various previously described types of representational techniques.
Lectures, practicals and workshops, excursions, individual and group work. Intensive tutoring, both individual as well as in small groups. Intermediate evaluations.
The examination consists of:
- a plant knowledge examination (20%);
- a sketch book and representation portfolio (40%);
- a portfolio of construction exercises and digital representations(40%).
Students need a minimum 5.5 for each of the products.
