This course overlaps with and is an abridged version of the on-campus courses HNH-37806 Nutrition and Cancer and HNH-32106 Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Diseases.
This course will briefly discuss the newest insights on the role of diet, lifestyle and body composition in the prevention and progression of cancer and on the etiology, treatment and prognosis of cardiometabolic diseases.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
1. Identify biological processes that contribute to the development of cardiometabolic diseases and the development and progression of cancer;
2. Explain the role of diet, lifestyle and body composition in the development and progression of cardiometabolic diseases in the development, progression and survival of cancer;
3. Recall major diet-related risk factors for cancer and the guidelines for primary and tertiary cancer prevention;
4. Explain diet-gene interactions and epigenetics in cancer development in Nutrition and Cancer;
6. Judge the value of evidence and guidelines on nutrition, cardiometabolic diseases and cancer based on critical evaluation of scientific literature;
Activities include studying knowledge clips (based on two MOOCs on Nutrition and Disease of Wageningen University, namely 1) Nutrition and Cancer and 2) Nutrition, Heart Disease and Diabetes), readings from books and papers, and assignments.
A remote proctored written exam with open and closed questions (50%) and written assignments (50%)
All study material will be provided in the learning environment of this course.
