Becoming a Teacher 1 integrates theory on teachers' professional development with practical teacher training. Students continually reflect upon their experiences and the development of their teaching competencies. They learn to formulate learning goals and plan activities with which they further develop themselves.
NB: this course is part of the Minor Education and is integrated with an internship at a school. Note that if you are interested, you can contact the coordinator Piety Runhaar (email@example.com) about six months before the actual start of the minor, so that the internship can be organized
After successful completion of this course, students are - under supervision within the domain of teaching at mavo and havo/vwo 1+2+3 or secondary vocational education (mbo) - expected to be able to:
- communicate on the level of the students (interpersonal competence);
- create a safe learning environment (pedagogical competence);
- create a powerful learning environment (pedagogical content knowledge);
- organize a learning environment that is well-structured, clear and task-oriented (planning);
- communicate and cooperate with other teachers in the school (cooperation with colleagues and environment).
Also, students are expected to be able to reflect on their classroom experiences and draw conclusions from these to improve their performance.
The students have to write their portfolio (which evolves from the personal development plan that students have written in ELS-51006 Becoming a Teacher Basics) and to participate in supportive meetings.
The students have to carry out observation assignments and participate in teaching activities.
Throughout the course students reflect on their classroom experiences in a portfolio.
Students can pass the course if they have sufficiently conducted all the assignments and participated actively in all meetings. The grade will be based on the performance during the internship (40%), on the quality of the portfolio (40%) and on the quality of the assignments on didactics (20%). Each of these three components needs a minimum mark of 5.5.
