This course will informs students with the interplay between the production of science and technology and the commercialisation of science and technology. It will help students to understand the principals of management of science and technology at individual, organisational and system level. The course covers topics of innovation management, scientific entrepreneurship and science commercialisation in a nutshell. We will go through open innovation, open science, triple & quadruple helix and other relevant models of management of science and technology. We will also practice these models utilising tools such as design thinking, stakeholder map, business model canvas and human centred design. The course contain four modules. Each module initiates with series of lectures explaining the relevant theories in that module and conclude with practitioners' insights in the form of guest lectures. In the first module we will go through principals of management of science and technology with a core focus on intellectual property rights and appropriation strategies. In the second module, we learn about individuals who play an important role in knowledge economy namely innovators and entrepreneurial scientists. In the third module we will learn about different types of organisations that play a significant role in knowledge economy such as intermediary organisations, startups and spin-offs. We also focus on the role of business model and how business models help organisations to communicate internally and externally. Finally, in the last module we learn about the notions of innovation ecosystems, innovation systems and also regional and international policies relevant for knowledge economy and its growth. Overall, Innovation and innovation management, knowledge and knowledge management, different approaches and best practices in the field of technology transfer and public-private partnerships will be discussed.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand the role of individuals, organisations and systems in the transfer and commercialisation of science and technology;
- analyse the link between science, business and policy by applying models from the domain of innovation management and knowledge management;
- understand and critically evaluate the role of intellectual property rights in innovation systems;
- understand that certain types of organisations, structures and practices that facilitate and hinder innovation;
- appreciate that innovation can be nurtured and developed by individuals and in the organisation through processes of education, training and the use of relevant tools and techniques for innovation and creativity.
The course activities consists of the following elements:
- course work and lectures: discussing the relevant literature in the field of innovation management, knowledge transfer etc.;
- guest lectures of practitioners and professionals in the field of knowledge transfer;
- problem-oriented activities:
a) students will have to work on problems they identify utilising tools such as design thinking, human centred designs and business models;
b) students will create a video, exploring a problem they find relevant to address.
- discussion and presentations: students will present and discuss their reading material with the rest of the students and lecturers;
- Weekly assignments in the form of weekly group reports.
Reports and presentation of group assignments (40%). Quizzes (60%), 4 quizzes throughout the course (each module contains a quiz that construct 15% of the grade). Both quiz and report need a Minimum mark of 5.5 to pass.
