Contents:

This course provides an overview and insight in animal feed ingredients and feed additives as well as least cost formulation of feeds. The course, therefore, provides the basis for feed formulation. The course covers the optimization of diet formulation by the use of linear programming techniques and discusses differences between theory and practice by experienced nutritionists working in the feed industry. A least cost formulation practical provides hand-on experience in how feeds are formulated in practice.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand the principles of feed formulation and its preconditions;
- apply simple and sophisticated linear programming techniques in formulating animal feeds/foods;
- interpret deviations (natural variation; analytical errors) in nutrient content and/or digestibility of feed ingredients with respect to its feeding value;
- demonstrate knowledge on feed additives in feeds for pigs, poultry, ruminants, fish and pets with respect to their working mechanisms;
- demonstrate knowledge of (main) groups of ingredients, including nutrient contents, animal feeding values and safety aspects for animals.

Activities:

Lectures with case studies and associated Powerpoint hand-outs provide students with theoretical and practical information. Via tutorials, exercises provide opportunity to students for self-learning. Ingredient knowledge will obtained through the use of websites (e.g. feedipedia). Students will practice the use of different techniques in formulating compound feeds. Computer practicals (linear programming) and an industry-orientated final week will show how theory is applied in practice.

Examination:

written exam covers the reader, lecture handouts, case studies and practical linear programming (100%).
