Contents:
The course combines fieldtrips with literature study and discussions with researchers, practitioners and policymakers. It aims at getting students acquainted with the pluriform nature of rural development in various regions in the Netherlands and the variety of actors and participation modes. Seeing rural development 'in action' is alternated with studying theoretical elaboration and explanation and discussing research projects with the responsible researchers. Moreover policymakers are invited to explain the policymakers point of view and their efforts to create new linkages between practice and policy by the introduction of new rural governance modes.
Aims:
- To develop knowledge and understanding of the rural development process in the Netherlands;
- To develop knowledge and understanding of the perspectives of both practitioners as well as policymakers;
- To understand the importance of practice-oriented research;
- To be able to assess the impact of policies on rural development practice;
- To be able to assess the importance of co-operation between researchers, practitioners and policymakers.
