Contents:

The focus of this introductory course is oriented to frameworks and key-concepts concerning political phenomena, particularly to analyse and to evaluate contemporary Dutch and European agricultural, environmental and nature policies. Major themes will be: political values (equity, freedom, solidarity, justice), political theories and ideologies; role of the state, civil society and market institutions; power and polity; policy and social change. Furthermore attention will be paid to international political relations (hegemony and governance), as well as the impact of globalisation and europeanisation on issues of public administration in the Netherlands.

Aims:

1. to develop a basic knowledge of political phenomena: democratisation; mechanisms of power and influence; political relationship between (nation-)state, civil society and market; (dis-)advantages of hegemony, trust and accountability, (de- and re-)territorialisation;
2. to get a first impression of the functioning of the Dutch and European political system
3. to gain an insight in political dilemmas on different levels of government.

Activities:

Participation in class lectures, active participation in discussions, study the obligatory readings, preparation of assignments.
